Your First Dispensary Visit: What to Expect

Walking into a dispensary for the first time? Here's everything you need to know — from what to bring to what to ask your budtender.

Your First Dispensary Visit: What to Expect

Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel like a big moment — and that’s completely normal. Maybe you’re not sure what to expect, what to bring, or what to say when someone asks what you’re looking for. We get it, and we want you to know: there’s nothing to worry about. A great dispensary is designed to make you feel welcome, comfortable, and supported from the moment you walk through the door.

Here’s your complete guide to what your first visit looks like.

What to Bring

Before you head out, make sure you have these essentials:

Valid Government-Issued ID

You must be 21 years of age or older to enter a cannabis dispensary in New York. Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID — a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID all work. Every customer gets their ID checked at the door, no exceptions. It’s quick, routine, and nothing to stress about.

Payment

Most dispensaries accept cash, and many (including Yerba Buena) also offer debit card options. It’s a good idea to have some cash on hand just in case. There’s often an ATM on-site if you need one.

An Open Mind

You don’t need to know anything about cannabis before you walk in. Seriously. Our team is here to meet you wherever you are in your journey — whether you’ve never touched cannabis before or you’ve been enjoying it for years.

What to Expect When You Walk In

Check-In

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted at the door and asked to show your ID. A team member will verify your age and welcome you in. At Yerba Buena, we keep this process friendly and fast — think of it as a quick hello, not a security checkpoint.

The Sales Floor

Once you’re inside, you’ll find yourself in the retail space where products are displayed. At Yerba Buena, our shop is designed to feel warm, inviting, and easy to navigate. Products are organized by category — flower, edibles, vapes, tinctures, topicals, beverages, and more — so you can browse at your own pace.

Take your time. Look around. Read the product descriptions. There’s no pressure to rush, and no one is going to judge you for taking a few minutes to soak it all in.

Budtender Help

This is where the magic happens. Our budtenders are trained cannabis educators who genuinely love helping people find the right products. When you’re ready, a budtender will walk you through your options, answer your questions, and make personalized recommendations based on what you’re looking for.

You don’t need to use fancy cannabis terminology. Just tell them what you want to feel or what you’re hoping to get out of the experience, and they’ll guide you from there.

How to Talk to Your Budtender

Your budtender is your best resource, and no question is too basic. Here are some great questions to ask during your visit:

“I’m new to this — where should I start?”

This is the best thing you can say. It immediately lets your budtender know to keep things simple and guide you toward beginner-friendly products. There’s zero judgment — we hear this every single day, and we love it.

”What do you recommend for ___?”

Whether you’re looking for relaxation, better sleep, pain relief, creativity, or just a good time with friends, telling your budtender your goal helps them narrow down the best options for you.

”What’s the difference between these products?”

If you’re looking at two similar items and aren’t sure which one to pick, ask. Your budtender can explain differences in potency, onset time, duration, and flavor so you can make an informed choice.

”How much should I take?”

Especially important for edibles and tinctures. Your budtender will walk you through dosing recommendations and help you start with an amount that’s right for your experience level. Remember: start low, go slow.

”What’s in this?”

Ask about cannabinoid content (THC, CBD, CBN, etc.), terpene profiles, and ingredients. Understanding what’s in your product helps you predict the experience and make better choices next time.

Understanding Product Labels

Cannabis product labels might look a little dense at first, but they’re actually packed with useful information. Here’s what to pay attention to:

  • THC Content: Listed as a percentage (for flower) or in milligrams (for edibles, tinctures, and beverages). This tells you how potent the product is.
  • CBD Content: Also listed as a percentage or in milligrams. Higher CBD often means a more balanced, gentler experience.
  • Serving Size: Especially important for edibles. A single gummy might contain 5mg or 10mg of THC, but the package might contain multiple servings.
  • Strain or Product Type: Labels often indicate whether a product is an indica, sativa, or hybrid. While these categories are simplifications, they can give you a general idea of the expected effects.
  • Terpenes: Some products list dominant terpenes, which influence the aroma, flavor, and effects. Ask your budtender if you want to learn more about specific terpenes.
  • Testing Information: Licensed products are lab-tested for potency and safety. Look for a batch number or QR code that links to the certificate of analysis.

Your Visit to Yerba Buena

At Yerba Buena, your first visit is something we take personally — because we remember what it felt like for us, too. Our Cobble Hill shop was designed from the ground up to feel like a welcoming neighborhood spot, not a sterile retail experience. We’re a family-owned, minority-owned, women-owned business rooted in our Dominican heritage and our Brooklyn community, and that warmth is baked into everything we do.

Our budtenders aren’t just salespeople — they’re educators, neighbors, and cannabis enthusiasts who genuinely care about helping you find what works for you. Whether you spend five minutes or fifty, whether you buy something or just browse and ask questions, you’re always welcome here.

A Few Final Tips

  • There’s no such thing as a dumb question. Ask as many as you need. That’s what we’re here for.
  • You don’t have to buy anything. It’s perfectly fine to visit, learn, and come back when you’re ready.
  • Start small. If it’s your first time, consider picking up one product to try rather than stocking up. You can always come back for more once you know what you like.
  • Save your receipt. Some dispensaries, including Yerba Buena, offer loyalty programs. Ask about our Seed Circle rewards program while you’re here — you’ll earn points on every purchase.
