Guaiol is one of the more unusual terpenes you’ll encounter — technically a sesquiterpenoid alcohol, it’s one of the few terpenes that’s a liquid at room temperature rather than an oil. Found in guaiacum wood (also known as lignum vitae, or “wood of life”), it has a piney, slightly rosy character that adds subtle complexity to cannabis.

What Does Guaiol Smell & Taste Like?

Guaiol blends pine and rose in an unexpected combination — woody and resinous with a soft, floral sweetness. Think pine sap warming in the sun, with a hint of wild roses. It’s understated, working more as a supporting note than a dominant aroma.

Where You’ll Find It

Guaiacum trees (native to the Caribbean and Central America) are the primary source — the wood has been valued for centuries for its hardness and the oil it produces. Cypress and some conifers also contain guaiol. In traditional medicine, guaiacum wood was used to treat a range of conditions, earning its Latin name meaning “wood of life.”

Effects & Benefits

Guaiol has been explored in preliminary laboratory studies for potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, though peer-reviewed evidence is limited. Its unique chemical structure — it’s a sesquiterpenoid alcohol rather than a simple hydrocarbon — gives it different physical properties than most terpenes, including being liquid at room temperature. Research on guaiol’s role in cannabis specifically is sparse.

What to Know When Shopping

Guaiol is uncommon in cannabis and typically appears as a minor terpene. With a boiling point of 290°C (554°F), it requires high temperatures to vaporize — it comes through most prominently when smoking or at elevated vaporizer settings. Strains with piney, complex profiles are the most likely to feature it.
