A Brief History of 4/20
The term “420” traces back to 1971 and five high school students in San Rafael, California—Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich, known as “The Waldos.”
They’d meet at 4:20 pm by the Louis Pasteur statue on campus to search for an abandoned cannabis crop (they never found it). Their code “420 Louie” spread through Grateful Dead circles, made its way into High Times magazine in the ’90s, and eventually became a global phenomenon.
The Oxford English Dictionary added “420” in 2017. What started as five teenagers and a treasure map is now an international holiday.
